Message from the President

To all of you across the world, welcome to the International Association of Labour Inspection (IALI) and to our website.

In June 2005, at our 3-yearly IALI Congress and General Assembly, I had the great honour of being elected as your President for the next 3 years. It is my wish that we can make this period one of true global involvement for labour inspection through regional cooperation programmes, and of genuine collaboration across our nations.

Our organisation has achieved much over the years and these successes are a tribute to all of the previous Executives of IALI – I extend my thanks to all of you and especially to our outgoing President, Dr Adrian Ellis, for leaving the organisation in such good shape.

Today, with Executive representatives in many regions of the world, we have a strengthened capacity to influence and promote strategies to make safe, healthy and decent work a reality around the world. Through continuing to build its worldwide membership, IALI in collaboration with others, can make a significant contribution towards the development of regional cooperation programmes to achieve this goal.

In the recent past, IALI has organised and participated in many successful conferences throughout the world – further details are given below – and I am sure that over the coming years, we will be able to continue and expand such activities. Apart from developing and implementing a new and exciting programme of conferences for the next 3 years, there are many worthwhile tasks to be achieved. Among these are the expansion and improvement of our web site, production of a new edition of the IALI Forum later this year, and sponsorship of other events that will help to strengthen Labour Inspectorates globally. One innovative idea proposed at the recent Congress in Geneva is the development of a Code of Ethics for Labour Inspection – an objective that I am sure would be of interest to us all.

Your new Executive is very interested in any ideas or interests you may have and wish to contribute to the IALI programme. I would like to encourage you all to contact us on any matter on which you think we might be able to assist or on any suggestions you would like to see IALI take up in the next 3 years.

By working together as a global organisation, we can promote the value of effective labour inspection and ensure that information is shared to benefit us all. Improved occupational health and safety and decent working conditions together deliver reductions in deaths, injuries, diseases, disputes and costs to business – as well as maintaining human dignity, generating more productive workers and the right environment for business to thrive. Through sharing information, innovative strategies and best practice, we can use this period to increase cooperation and joint campaigns around the world.

I look forward to hearing from you and to meeting many of you at IALI functions over the next 3 years.

Best wishes

Michele Patterson
